Fifteen years ago, I would never have guessed that I would be thrown deeply into the study of the autonomic nervous system. My story is an unusual one that began with a dramatic, disabling illness that robbed me of my ability to practice optometry, the profession that gave me so much joy. After years of illness, studying, and experimenting, I am back to work with some fascinating answers for some patients who suffer from chronic dry eye disease (DED).
Here, I discuss what happened and how my experience as an optometrist helped me triumph over a disorder of the autonomic nervous system and culminated in answers for neurological DED.
